An evening with the Friends of Swallow Caye

Today we had the day off. I went to the beach in the morning. It was a nice time! The water was cold and it was a little overcast, but warm. After lunch I met some people at The Split to celebrate Abbey’s birthday. What a nice and relaxing day. At 7 pm we enjoyed a presentation from Friends of Swallow Caye. Swallow Caye is a wildlife sanctuary near Caye Caulker. This area of Belize is home to the largest known concentration of Antillean Manatees in the Caribbean. Many of these manatees gather at Swallow Caye for the mating season. Swallow Caye is thought to have freshwater springs which the manatees use for drinking water, but people haven’t been able to find them yet. The organization Friends of Swallow Caye educates locals and tourists of the manatees and promotes protection for them with the park fees they collect from tour boats. I was surprised to hear that their operating budget for the year is only $100,000- including salaries! I wasn’t fortunate enough to see any manatees in Caye Caulker, but I’m glad that an organization is working to protect them.
