Day 9: Turquoise waters

Just off the shores of Caye Caulker lie the most magnificent coral reefs. We spent the morning snorkeling to survey the different coral and fish species. Each with obvious distinguishing features, the coral species included the Brain, Boulder, Fire, Finger, and Fan. The most widely observed fish species were the Yellowtail Snapper, Flounder, Barracuda, Lionfish, and the Moray eel. Most of the fish species are also found in Florida however, it was quite amazing seeing them glide past so effortlessly and so close.

Sea sickness set in just before heading to shore. I still wasn’t feeling well when it came to head back out after lunch but missing shark and ray alley wasn’t an option for me. Sardine filled conchs were used to attract the swarms as we gazed in awe.

After moving to a different location in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, we began collecting Queen Conchs for study. For two transects all the conch’s lengths were measured and the adult lips were measured.

The day ended with some much needed R&R.
