Culture shock

Day 3: Culture shock
First and foremost: that hairy spider last night?  Confirmed, Tarantula. Today we left LCRS after breakfast to tour the Caracol Archaeological Reserve for a day focused on culture and the environment.  This is an ancient Mayan site. And it was amazing. We learned about their culture and even had Mr. Machete (as we will fondly remember him) speak to us in the Mayan language.  That was pretty neat. Adaptive management was a main focus of discussion here today. This is where we adapt a way to manage a source based on situation and scientific data and to find new information in time to adapt the old laws to mitigate or change them.  There are many factors involved in adaptive management and the trick part is pleasing all of them: social, political and ecological. Most times, about 90% of the focus is on the infrastructure and sadly, that leaves only about 10% for ecology.
The idea that I will take from today was the question that Boris posed when he asked how we were impacting a site as visitors, travelers, people etc. However, the important thing to remember is that although these impacts cannot be avoided, they can be positive or negative. Because if you don’t have respect for things, places, nature etc., you have no need for conservation.
And todays shower didn’t feel quite as cold…perhaps I could get used to this?
