Day 12 –“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing isgoing to get better. Its not.”-Dr. Seuss
…ok now I have
gone and quoted Winnie the Pooh and Dr seuss!
Today we have the
morning free. Free beach day??! Well, okJ Spent the morning
working on our tree research and doing some reading and a whole lot of coffee
drinking. Its so nice to be back where real coffee is just three Belize dollars
away. After lunch we spent some time swimming and sunbathing and then got ready
ot meet for dinner.
After dinner, we
went to the Friends of Swallow Caye building for a presentation on manatees. It
was a little up in the air because the founder, Chocolate had recently passed
away. But in the end, there was a good presentation on manatees in the Belize
area. Apparently Belize is the largest concentration of the Antillean Manatee
in the Caribbean. This group does manatee research, community outreach,
management, surveillance, and enforcement. And because they are a non profit
organization, they run into many of the same issues as most conservation
groups. And that problem is money. Obviously boats, fuel, supplies etc cost a
lot of money and only so much can be done without it FOSC rely a lot on their
members for funds or volunteering of services or boats. It seemed like they definitely
had community support.
Save the Manatee!
